    BBC Sport Scotland at Ibrox

It was another incredible Europa League night at Ibrox and in the unlikeliest of circumstances, Rangers have a fighting chance.

Surely, there's no way Liam Kelly will sleep tonight after that late penalty save. His inclusion was a massive call and he fully, fully justified it.

Rangers remain alive with another tough examination to follow next week in Bilbao.

  • 'Phenomenal effort'published at 22:44 British Summer Time 10 April

    Steven Thompson
Former Rangers striker on BBC Radio Scotland

For a 0-0, it's as good as you could have hoped for.

For large parts, Rangers had to suffer and play without the ball. The amount of work they got through individually and collectively was phenomenal.

    They absolutely burst themselves.

  • 'We need to grasp this opportunity'published at 22:42 British Summer Time 10 April

    FT: Rangers 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

Rangers interim boss Barry Ferguson on TNT Sports: "We're still in the tie, it's all to play for now. We'll go over there and try to approach the game in a certain manner.

"We fully deserved what we got tonight, we just need to wait and see who's fit and available, but what an opportunity we've got and we need to grasp that with both hands."

  • Ferguson heaps praise on 'really good' Kellypublished at 22:39 British Summer Time 10 April

    FT: Rangers 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

More from Rangers interim manager Barry Ferguson, who adds on TNT Sports: "Jack [Butland] when he was in goals was great at saving penalties. Liam [Kelly] tonight came up trumps with a brilliant save.

"He was really good tonight, but everyone who stepped across the line gave everything tonight and I need to see that more.

"Bailey Rice is alright, he's been up and talking. Dujon Sterling will be sent for a scan first thing, we need to wait and see. We're having to travel up to Aberdeen on Saturday, so I just need to see what kind of numbers.

"It'll probably need to be a fully changed team because there are a lot of guys carrying knocks. There were a couple of guys I asked to go out and play for me tonight and they did that."

  • 'A proper Rangers performance' - Fergusonpublished at 22:36 British Summer Time 10 April

Rangers interim manager Barry Ferguson tells TNT Sports: "That was a proper Rangers performance. That's the exact reaction I wanted.

"That's what I spoke about on Monday and the players tonight showed a performance full of heart, grit and determination.

"It was a bit chaotic [the sending off]. I can see why the referee gave a red card, but at that stage you need to shuffle the pack. I had to play a way I didn't necessarily want to. Some people had to put a real shift in and they did.

"There was a real togetherness and I keep saying to them I need to see that every week."

James Tavernier gets a hard time for his defensive work, so it's only fair he gets praise for his display tonight.

The Rangers right-back was solid against Spain winger Nico Williams.

He also made his 62nd appearance in major European competition for Rangers (level with John Greig), with only Allan McGregor managing more (78).

  • 'We dug deep for positive result' - Tavernierpublished at 22:30 British Summer Time 10 April

    FT: Rangers 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

Rangers captain James Tavernier tells TNT Sports: "I thought the penalty was a little bit harsh because they said it was a deliberate handball from Dujon [Sterling].

"We're here to help the team, it wasn't the prettiest game but we had to dig deep and got a positive result, especially with 10 men.

"European nights always take care of themselves. It's domestically that has been our Achilles heel this season. The performance we put in tonight is what we have to do consistently in the league."

  • 'Kelly the standout for Rangers'published at 22:21 British Summer Time 10 April

    FT: Rangers 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

    Steven Naismith
Former Rangers striker on BBC Sportsound

It feels like a victory. Everything was up against them - an early red card, injuries, the debatable penalty.

But I'm not sitting here surprised. The foundation of Rangers' successes this season is a solid defensive structure. You can see it's been worked on.

Everyone knew their role. Some of the performances defensively were brilliant.

Liam Kelly is the standout. Barry Ferguson has made big decisions since he's come in. He made two big calls tonight - Kelly and Rice.

Kelly is now Rangers' number one.

  • 'Kelly hero of the night'published at 22:18 British Summer Time 10 April

    FT: Rangers 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

    Andy Halliday
Former Rangers midfielder on BBC Sportsound

Liam Kelly has justified the manager's decision to put him in. He's going to be the hero of the night.

He's kept Rangers in this tie going over to Spain.

He wasn't overly busy, despite Rangers going down to 10 early on.

  • 'I don't care about me, I just want to help the team'published at 22:15 British Summer Time 10 April

    FT: Rangers 0-0 Athletic Bilbao

Rangers goalkeeper Liam Kelly tells TNT Sports: "I never actually had much to do in the game, once we went down to 10 men the guys in front of me were absolutely brilliant.

"We didn't really know what was happening [after Bilbao scored] and then all of a sudden you hear penalty.

"I just wanted to help the team, I don't really care about me."

Rangers goalkeepers have saved three of the last seven penalties they have faced in major European competition, courtesy of two by Allan McGregor, in the 2021-22 Europa League and the 2022-23 Champions League.
